Overview

Spectra Analytics Training courses are specifically designed to give employers and employees the skills they need to succeed in the Big Data era.

Participants will develop the practical skills to improve their productivity and efficiency and help forge a data-driven focus within their area.

We offer a range of courses for different abilities from the Big Data novice to the experienced data scientist. Private tailored training courses are also available for businesses with more than 10 participants.

Big Data for Business Leaders

One Day Course | Cost: £2000

This 1 day course will demystify Big Data and Data Science. It will explain simply what Big Data and data analytics are, the opportunities and challenges they bring, how to build a data-driven organisation and your regulatory obligations.

This course is designed as an overview for executives and senior managers who want to better understand Big Data and Data Science and the implications for their business. This course is aimed at company executives and mangers not data scientists.

Discuss real world examples of Big Data and the opportunities and risk it brings.

Understanding the concepts of analytics

Discuss the standard tools of data analytics, how they are being used and their strengths and weaknesses. Learn how to talk to your data scientists and quantitative analysts.

Building a data-driven organisation

We discuss how to put data at the forefront of your organisation. To use data to drive decision making rather than just supporting it. We show how to get insightful and actionable information from your analysis and how to monitor its effectiveness.

Understanding your responsibilities

Teach you the regulations covering data management and analyse and discuss the ethical considerations.

Big Data for Business - Foundation Level

Three Day Course | Cost: £3000

This 3 day course will give you the basic skills to conduct day-to-day data analysis. Expert data scientists will teach you how to collect, store, manage and visualise data. You will also gain an understanding of the regulations governing data management and the ethics of data analysis. This is the first in a series of Big Data for Business courses.

Overview

Participants will learn how to:

  1. drive efficiency and productivity gains through process automation
  2. deliver greater understanding through analysis and data visualisation
  3. formulate a Big Data framework with an understanding of data regulations and ethics

Who should attend

This course is designed for people who deal with data in their day-to-day work and are new to data analysis. If you would like to improve your understanding of how to manage, manipulate and analyse data, then this is the course for you.

Pre-requisites

There are no pre-requisites but basic programming skills would be advantageous.

Programme

Why data analysis is so important

This session sets the scene for the three days. It describes the opportunities for data analysis and its role within and organisation. It also describes how Big Data is being used in different industries.

Collecting Data

This session will teach you to collect, store, clean and combine data from a variety of sources. You will learn to use Python, a general purpose programming language that is quickly becoming the language of choice for data scientists. You will learn the following skills:

  • Collect: import and export data from Excel spreadsheets, databases and other data files. Plus learn to scrape data from the internet to enrich and validate your datasets.

  • Store: build a relational database to store your data and construct basic queries using SQL to examine your data.

  • Clean: sort, reformat, aggregate and remove bad data. Plus handling duplicate and missing data.

  • Combine: integrate data from different sources.

Getting to know your data

This session will teach you to calculate basic descriptive statistics and create visualisations to help you better understand and describe your data. You will learn the following skills:

  • Statistics: calculate counts, averages, variances and ranges for your data. Plus fit simple distributions to represent the data.

  • Visualisations: plot your data using graphs, pie charts and maps etc. Plus learn to display the results interactively on a webpage using javascript and c3.

Understanding your responsibilities

This session is designed to teach you the regulations covering data management and analyse and discuss the ethical considerations. You will learn the following skills:

  • Regulation: find out your obligations under the Data Protection Act.

  • Cyber Security: find out basic methods that can be used to improve the security of your data.

  • Ethics: understand the factors that influence judgements in data analysis.

Anonymising data for sharing

This session will teach you how to anonymise data so that you can share and collaborate with 3rd parties using sensitive information.

  • Anonymisation: de-identify data using K-anonymity and Differential Privacy.

Big Data for Business - Intermediate Level 1

Two Day Course | Cost: £3000

This 2 day course will teach you some of the standard machine learning tools used by data scientists. You will learn how to identify target groups within datasets, analyse social networks, conduct sentiment analysis and use images as a source of data. This is the second in a series of Big Data for Business courses.

Overview

Participants will learn how to:

  1. target customers more efficiently by identifying customer segments with through machine learning

  2. understand the relationships between customers by analysing their social networks

  3. understand customer reviews and comments using sentiment analysis and natural language processing

  4. use images as a source of data using image recognition

Who should attend

This course is designed for people who are comfortable with conducting basic data analysis but would like to develop more sophisticated skills.

Programme

Using segmentation methods to identify differences between your customers

This session aims to help you more accurately target customers by identifying groups within data. This makes use of machine learning techniques in Python. This is a general purpose programming language that is quickly becoming the language of choice for data scientists. You will learn the following skills:

  • Classification & Clustering: use supervised and unsupervised learning to identify customer segments.

Identifying connections in customer relationships

This session aims to help you to identify connections within a community to better understand and target a customer base. Specifically we will show you how to analyse and compare your social network.

  • Networks: create a network map of your contacts and a visual representation. Calculate statistics to compare networks and understand how they are evolving.

Understanding customer sentiment using natural language processing

In this session you will learn to analyse customer reviews and comments using machine learning to determine sentiment. This should allow your firm to quickly identify key customer issues and react more quickly.

  • Sentiment Analysis: use the Natural Language Processing (NLP) Toolkit in Python to analyse tweets.

Utilising images as a data source using image recognition

In this session you will learn to deal with images as a source of data. Using deep learning techniques from machine learning we will identify key features of images.

  • Image Recognition: use TensorFlow from Google to identify and classify images.

Big Data for Business - Intermediate Level 2

Two Day Course | Cost: £3000

This 2 day course will teach you some of the standard statistical tools used by data scientists. You will learn how to identify patterns in your business data and build predictive models. You will also be taught how to validate your models and calculate statistical significance to determine if you should act on your analysis. This is the third in a series of Big Data for Business courses.

Overview

Participants will learn how to:

  1. determine the statistical significance of their analysis

  2. identify patterns in business metrics over time using time series analysis

  3. understand customer reviews and comments using sentiment analysis and natural language processing

  4. generate forecasts for Key Performance Indicators (KPI) through predictive modelling

Who should attend

This course is designed for people who are comfortable with conducting basic data analysis but would like to develop more sophisticated skills.

Pre-requisites

Knowledge of analysing data in Python and a reasonable level of numeracy is required.

Programme

Identifying Patterns in time series data

This session is designed to help you identify patterns in time series data.

  • Fourier Analysis: identify periodic patterns in time series data.

  • Wavelet Analysis: identify time-varying patterns in time series data.

Using modelling techniques to predict the future

This session is designed to help you make forecasts for your business. You will learn how to build a simple predictive models based on a variety of factors.

  • Regression: build logistic and linear regression models for factor analysis and a auto-regressive models for time series analysis.

  • Gaussian Processes: use SciKit Learn Toolkit for Python to model time series data.

Estimating the statistical significance of your analysis

In this session you will learn how to determine the statistical significance of you analysis. This is very important in determining if you should act on your findings.

  • Sampling statistics: calculate t-statistics, p-values, confidence intervals.

  • Validation: use cross-validation to ensure the stability of your results.

Big Data for Business - Advanced Level

Data science is underpinned by mathematical and statistical principles. In order to conduct rigorous and sophisticated data analysis it is important to understand and incorporate these aspects.

Overview

Upon request we build tailored courses covering advanced aspects such as Bayesian Statistics, Stochastic Processes, Causal Inference, Multivariate Statistics, Network Theory, Data Simulation and Optimisation. The course will be run by an university lecturer who is an expert in the field. Please contact us for more information.

Who should attend

This course is designed for data analysts who wish to hone and perfect their skills.

N.B. a minimum of 10 participants are required to run a course.

Pre-requisites

This course requires an undergraduate degree in a quantitative subject and basic programming skills.
